Must-Do Experience In Montenegro: Cable Car Kotor

If you're seeking a must-do experience in Montenegro , the Cable Car ride from Kotor to Lovcen should be on your 7-day itinerary list . In just 11 minutes, you'll journey from sea level up to the majestic heights of Lovcen, where breathtaking views and fun-filled activities await.

This isn't just about the ride—there's plenty to do once you reach the top, from an Alpine Coaster that offers jaw-dropping views of Boka Bay to serene hiking trails through the lush woods of Lovcen National Park. And when you’re ready to relax, there’s the Forza Kuk restaurant and the lively Monter1350Bar, both with views to die for.

How to Get to the Cable Car Kotor

You can start your day with a morning swim in the blue waters of Boka Bay. Later in the afternoon, you can drive to the Cable Car Kotor, where you are eager to experience this iconic ride and sunset.

If you’re staying in the capital, renting a car at Podgorica Airport is a convenient way to reach the Kotor cable car. The drive from Podgorica offers beautiful scenery, and having a car gives you the flexibility to explore the amazing panoramic roads in Montenegro

The Dub station, where the cable car ride begins, is easily accessible by car from Budva, Kotor, Tivat, or just about anywhere in Boka Bay. The drive takes between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on traffic. During the summer there can be a traffic jam.

If you choose to come from Cetinje, the Old Royal Capital of Montenegro, you’re in for a treat. The drive through Lovcen National Park is nothing short of spectacular, with winding roads and scenic landscapes that are a photographer's dream.

When you arrive at the Dub station, parking is a breeze. The lot is spacious, and with a fee of just 1 EUR per hour, it’s very affordable.

Kotor Cable Car Experience

The cable car ride itself is nothing short of spectacular. It takes around 11 minutes, you’ll ascend from the Dub station, located 32 meters above sea level, to the Kuk station at 1,348 meters on Mount Lovcen.

As you glide upwards, the panorama of Boka Bay will be in front of you, revealing Tivat on the other side, its airport, and the charming town of Kotor. It’s a perspective of Montenegro that you won’t get anywhere else.

For an extra special experience, I recommend timing your trip to arrive at the top just before sunset. The view as the sun dips below the horizon, casting a golden glow over Boka Bay, is simply breathtaking.

And don’t rush back down—stick around until after dark to see the twinkling lights of the towns below. It’s pure magic.

Alpine Coaster Experience

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Alpine Coaster, but it turned out to be a highlight of the trip.

View on Boka Bay from Cable Car Kotor

Truly a unique experience, a driving coaster with an amazing view over Boka Bay. Racing down the track at up to 40 kph with the stunning backdrop of the sea is an experience I won’t soon forget.

You can control the speed, so if you’re riding with kids or just want to take it easy, you can go slower and stop whenever you like to soak in the views.

Restaurants and Cafes

If you’re a fan of dining with a view, the Forza Kuk restaurant at the top of the cable car ride is a great place to enjoy fresh mountain nights. Whether you’re stopping for lunch, dinner, or just a coffee, the panoramic views will enhance your meal.

However, If you’re planning to stay for dinner, bring a warm layer. Even in summer, the temperature on Mount Lovcen can dip below 15°C once the sun goes down.

Hiking Tours

The cable car and Alpine Coaster are just the beginning. Lovcen National Park offers plenty of other activities to keep you busy during the rest of the day. There are well-marked hiking trails that wind through the park’s lush forests, offering peaceful walks and the chance to connect with nature. If you’re into cycling, the Velo experiences provide an exciting way to explore the park on two wheels.

For those with more time, I recommend visiting the Njegos Mausoleum.

Sunset Over Boka Bay

As much fun as the Alpine Coaster was, the highlight of my visit was watching the sunset from Monte1350Bar or Forza Kuk. There’s nothing quite like drinking your favourite cocktail while taking in the views of Boka Bay as the sun sets behind the mountains.
